Network rack re-wiring and testing for a small business

We were called out to a new client this month as their network was a mess and was failing. Heat damage due to an un-airconditioned data room had left the patch panels literally falling apart. The constant intermittent connections meant they were struggling to maintain a stable network which was crucial for their business operations.

The Requirements

This business, which relies heavily on transmitting large image files, needed a fast and dependable network. Anything less was costing them time, efficiency, and, ultimately, revenue. They needed a new multi-gigabit capable network to the two floors of their building.

The solution

The rack to be completely rewired, new patch panels and patch cables as the heat had caused both to fail and come apart (see the "before" photo to the right!). We came onsite after a sparky had installed a new split system to get their network sorted. All patch panels were slated for replacement with CAT 6 panels and a slew of cables along with more CAT6 jacks on the client PC end. There was CAT6 cabling already in the walls and it on inspection was undamaged and good to go.

Implementation

We understand how important it is to keep disruptions to a minimum, so we scheduled to knock this out in a full day, normally we would spread this over two days due to the amount of work required. We arrived onsite bright and early at 6:30 AM to ensure enough time to get it all done and get their main office area completed before 10am to limit interruption to the business.

Here’s how we went about it:

  • Stripped the current rack and removed all the old cabling to allow access.
  • Replaced the old patch panels in the network rack starting with the top that serviced the office.
  • Reconnected the existing CAT6 cabling to the new patch panels, ensuring each wire was reterminated properly.
  • Tested every single connection from patch panel to wall ports, ensuring no issues and confidence it would last for years to come.
  • Patched in the new CAT6 patch panels to their network switch getting them up and going again.

As you can imagine, it was a big job, but our team was up for the challenge. Check out the action shots to see how we got it done.

Outcome

After a long day of hard work and testing, the results speak for themselves. The network cabinet is now neat, organised, and most importantly, fully operational. Every network port is tested and now active, and the client couldn’t be happier with the transformation. And most importantly being back up and running with the least amount of disruption. Lastly we recommended a good value solution for a switch replacement as their current one while still working was likely damaged due to the heat as well.
